Pregnancy Diagnosis
Ultrasound is extremely accurate and safe but does not give an exact count of puppies especially when there is a large litter. At Animal Reproduction Australia, we have the experience and modern equipment to ensure all your ultrasounds for small animal needs are catered for. We have helped numerous breeders and pet owners with ultrasounds for dogs and cats. Get in touch with us today to discuss your ultrasound needs.
When To Get An Ultrasound
An ultrasound may be performed from around three weeks to three and a half weeks after a mating if progesterone tests were performed and the ideal mating day was calculated. If progesterone testing was not performed it would be better to wait until 4 weeks after the mating to be sure. Ultrasounds can be performed later in pregnancy too, however the later it is performed the less accurate the counts of puppies are.
Early ultrasounds can detect resorptions where the foetus dies for some reason and is resorbed. One or two resorptions are common in a large litter.
X-rays
We use radiographs (X-rays) to give a more accurate count of pups and take them in the last week of pregnancy.
